Piece of Meat

Picture
Installation view from the exhibition Too Much! Overconsumption and our Relationship to Stuff at New Jersey City University
Piece of Meat employs recycled lingerie and party dresses to create a narrative about abusive relationships and what role our consumer society plays in perpetuating that aggressive behavior. The overabundance of barely used clothing items found in second hand stores speak volumes to me about a culture obsessed with self-gratification and power, and an economy fueled on appealing to our base instincts as sexual beings. In particular, Just Close Your Eyes deals with child sexual abuse by highlighting sadly, a much too small piece of lingerie.
